Day 10: The Review

Most of us are used to how a Marvel movie works by now. Guy gets powers, another guy gets powers, both guys fight, world is saved.
Deadpool is different in that it takes this ‘Typical Marvel Movie’ idea and only uses around 30 minutes of it in the film. The other 90 minutes is pure fun. The jokes are hilarious, so much that at times it’s hard to catch your breath.
Half of the movie is Deadpool making fun of himself. From having an action figure of his role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, to crediting himself as “Some Hot Guy” in the film’s opening credits, to even stapling a picture of Hugh Jackman over his scarred face.
Deadpool truly captures the feeling you get when watching a superhero movie in the most obscure way possible.
Ryan Reynolds portrays the character amazingly (it’s a good thing he did, since he’s been trying to get this film made for almost a decade.) It’s as if he rose off the pages of the comics.
The gory violence in this film is also another reason to go see this movie. In the first 10 minutes alone, a thug is splattered against a highway sign, another has his head cut off, and three of them get shot with one bullet. ONE BULLET. THREE PEOPLE. Even later in the film, Deadpool cuts off his own hand. AND IT GROWS BACK. AS A BABY HAND! That alone is enough for the price of one movie ticket.
However, as with all movies, this one has some faults. The villains in the film aren’t that memorable, perhaps because of their limited amount of screen time. The plot at times feels too dragged out, and at other times it feels too rushed. But perhaps my biggest complaint is how small scale the film is. In the comics Deadpool travels the entire Marvel Universe, annoying anyone and everyone in his path. But here, the only other heroes seen are Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. But even then, Deadpool manages to impress, commenting how “it’s almost as if the studio couldn’t afford any other X-Men.”
In conclusion, Deadpool is a delight. The comedy is genius, Reynolds portrays the character perfectly, and the violence is captivating. Even though the film has some problems, the film manages to redeem itself in the end.
Final Score: 4.25 Stars
