This weekend, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War officially opened at the American box office! The film grossed an estimated $181.79 million dollars, making it the third highest opening for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film (Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $191.3 million and Avengers grossed $207.4 million, respectively).
The film also beat out the two previous films in the franchise for gross on its opening weekend, Captain America: The First Avenger ($65 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million).
It is also worth noting that the film beat out the most recent entry in the Iron Man franchise, Iron Man 3, for domestic gross on opening weekend ($174.1). This is significant as Iron Man appeared in the film, so the appearance of Iron Man most definitely contributed to some of the film’s success.
Another noteworthy accomplishment is that the film beat the other hero vs hero film of the summer, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made $166 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. However, the film still trails behind Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), and Jurassic World ($208.8 million) for opening weekend domestic box office gross, respectively.

Marvel TV:
This week, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will deal with the aftermath of Civil War, and the continuing of the Fallen Agent story arc. The official synopsis reads: “With only two episodes left before SHIELD loses one of their own, Daisy’s (Chloe Bennet) prophecy ticks closer towards a major loss, as the aftermath of the events of ‘Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War’ force SHIELD to register the Inhumans.” Looks like it’s going to be a long week for our favorite agents, seeing as the Secret Warriors most likely won’t want to sign up with the agency that accused them all of being spies a few weeks ago.
Things to Look Forward to This Week:
Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War will continue to be playing in theaters for the next few weeks, and will no doubt be marching past the billion dollar mark in a few weeks. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have a new episode air Tuesday night at 9:00, the last episode before the two hour finale next week. There are also 18 comics coming out this week (16 Superhero, 1 Star Wars, 1 Book Adaption).
